First Descent

The book was found inside a furnace that had not burned out in nine hundred years. Its pages were thin as onion skin, black at the edges, and warm enough to blister anyone who opened it without permission.

Permission, according to the first page, could only be granted by someone willing to lose certainty.

The monk who discovered it had spent his life copying approved terrors: pits, hooks, screams, punishments arranged with the tidy imagination of men who had never doubted their own salvation. This text was different. It did not threaten. It mourned.

On the second page, written in a language older than guilt, the monk found a sentence that ruined him: Hell was not made for pain. Hell was made for truth.
