Dis, the Unfinished City

A metropolis rebuilt nightly from failed utopias, ruined sanctuaries, and monuments erected to forgotten certainties.

Worn, rough hand-drawn sketch of Dis, the Unfinished City
A field sketch recovered from the cartographer's papers. It is not drawn to scale.

A city without a final plan

By dusk, Dis has almost become the perfect city someone once promised. By dawn, its avenues expose the cost of that promise. A palace becomes a tenement; a sanctuary opens into a factory; a triumphal stair ends against the back wall of a kitchen.

The inhabitants

Exiles keep shops beneath scaffolds that have stood for centuries. They build rooms from remembered homes, trading doors, windows, and arguments about where the light used to fall. The only reliable addresses belong to those willing to leave room for a neighbor.

Finding your way

Follow the sound of work rather than the tallest tower. Every monument claims to be the center. The public squares move when a crowd agrees too easily, and the night builders never explain whose blueprint they are correcting.
